Summer is Coming to an End: Turn to Self-Storage to Protect Those Summer Belongings

Sadly, for some, the summertime easy living days are almost over as we move through the month of September. Don’t bust out the sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes just yet, though! It’s time to start the official goodbyes (or see you soons) to all the beloved summer items you enjoyed the past few months.

As temperatures drop and the leaves begin to fall, the transition to Autumn is inevitably coming soon. With that in mind, if you haven’t started, this is the time to begin bringing in your outdoor summer furniture, packing summer clothing, and cleaning out your beach gear to make space for the fall season ahead.

Why Turn to Alliston Self-Storage?

Sure, your garage may seem like a feasible storage solution in theory, but an off-site self-storage facility provides you with unmatched security and climate control, protecting your belongings from the risks of theft and damage that go beyond what your garage can offer. Plus, why not save garage space for your fall and winter toys?

If you’re confused about where to start, here are some useful tips for storing your summer items:

Take Inventory

After you’ve finalized which personal belongings you’ll be keeping protected away in self-storage for the winter, be sure you take proper inventory of what remains. Without maintaining a detailed list of the specific summer items you’re parting with for the cold season ahead, it’s extremely easy to forget what you’ve stored away and what is simply buried in your closet or attic. This small task will save you headaches and unnecessary stress when the lovely warm weather greets us with its beauty again!

What to Do BEFORE Transporting Summer Belongings to Self-Storage

Clean All Items

It may go without saying, but nobody wants to dig out dirty items from storage. Whether it’s a sandy beach bucket, muddy patio furniture or your favourite comfy t-shirt that still has a mustard stain on it from your big summer bash, it doesn’t benefit anyone to leave things in a questionable state. Wipe down belongings that need a quick clean and wash summer gear that is visibly stained or has an unpleasant odour to it. It shouldn’t take very long and you’ll be glad you did when you’re ready to pull everything out again.

On the same note, refrain from storing anything that is damp in storage. Why is this such a big deal? Dampness can lead to all sorts of issues, all of which could cause damage to your personal belongings. To avoid this possibility, never transport summer items on a rainy or snowy day unless they are packed and protected from the elements, as these are conditions that can immediately cause excess moisture formation, contributing to the development of mold. Not fun or healthy!

Beach Gear

  • As mentioned, it’s important to clean and dry all your supplies before they are placed in storage.
  • Allow a bit of space between these items if possible, so that there’s sufficient airflow.
  • Consider using moisture absorbers to ensure that mold/mildew doesn’t develop and the item won’t have a musty smell as a result.

Summer Clothing

  • Wash and dry your clothing before packing these articles away for storage.
  • Plastic containers are quite handy and should be used to keep clothing clean and dry. Clear plastic containers allow for visibility as well, which you may benefit from in the future if you find yourself desperately seeking a specific dress or pair of shorts sooner than you thought.
  • Fold your clothing loosely to reduce creasing – or try rolling clothing instead, as this method uses space more effectively and reduces unwanted creases.
  • Love the smell of fresh warm laundry? Who doesn’t! Replicate this comforting scent by placing a dryer sheet or dried lavender in with your clothing.
  • Use wardrobe boxes in addition to plastic containers for those items you prefer to hang.

Patio Furniture

  • Cover all pieces of furniture with dust or furniture covers.
  • While obvious, we still want to remind customers to double check that the tank of your grill is disconnected from the barbecue if these will be joining the rest of your belongings in storage. Sometimes we get distracted throughout the hustle and bustle of cleaning and organizing, but let’s be honest, this is a safety concern that simply cannot be overlooked!
  • Use dry, plastic containers for storing placemats, tablecloths and other outdoor kitchen accessories.

Sports Gear and Vehicles

  • As with the above categories, take the time to clean and completely dry all sports equipment and vehicles, such as ATV’s.
  • It is imperative that fuel is removed from operating vehicles prior to storage (We trust you already know this, but we must reiterate it!)
  • Cover items to prevent foam or rubber materials from potential damage.
  • To keep things as dirt-free as possible, place a dust cover on the ground before you begin moving these items into storage.
