Is Your RV Ready For The Cooler Months?

If you read our last post, you might remember that we outlined some tips to help you prepare your boat for winter storage. With summer ending the time is near for boats to get ready for the cooler months. RVers also know this feeling as it becomes time to prepare the RV for the colder months.

Whether you store your RV during the fall or remain adamant to hit the open road, the winter months call for special storage preparations that all RVers should know about. As summer comes to an end, checking routine things such as oil and filters will help maintain the motor as cooler months approach. Checking for water damage is another factor that RVers should always be on the lookout for, since damage that goes unnoticed for the winter months can lead to a difficult time getting ready for next season.

As far as storage is concerned, we have some tips to share when preparing your RV for storage.

  1. Start with preventative maintenance steps. This includes the aforementioned oil changing, filter and tire check, and battery maintenance.
  2. Check the water holding tanks. Frozen water lines, pumps and tanks can create a world of headaches when it’s time to open up for the season.
  3. Give your RV a good clean. Inside and out.Clean out the cabinets, carpets, sinks, fridge and bathroom. Make sure there is no food left inside that might attract critters! Give the exterior a good wash from top to bottom. Getting rid of grime and debris can protect and maintain the paintwork, and make re-opening next season much more satisfying!
  4. Cover your RV and its wheels. This is important to protect both the paintwork and chassis of your RV. Harmful UV rays can cause paint to fade, and vinyl and rubber materials such as seals to crack and fade. Consider applying a layer of wax to your RV after washing, and inspect seams and sealants for cracks. Raise tires off of the ground with wooden blocks. If you plan to leave your RV for the winter, remove the battery and store it somewhere it cannot freeze. Ensure the battery is fully charged during storage.

Winter time is a sad time for many who maintain summer hobbies. But following these tips can kick off the next RV season on a positive note!
