self storage tips and tricks

Failing to Insure Belongings

– While we provide safe and secure storage units to our clients, we are not responsible for any losses to your items. We suggest that you check with your insurance company in regards to your homeowner or renter’s policy to confirm whether it covers items kept in storage. If not, there is low cost insurance available at our storage centers. If you aren’t covered, you can look into arranging a policy with a specialty insurance provider; remember that in doing so, if you need to file a claim due to fire or theft, your belongings will be protected

Wrapping Belongings in Newspaper

– Avoid using newspaper to wrap your precious items in; the ink can bleed onto your belongings leaving unwanted smudges, which of course leaves them looking dirty and leaves you with more work! Consider turning to ink-free wrapping paper that’s specifically for this purpose; we provide all of your self-storage supplies directly at our facility.

Storing Food

– This may have you laughing from the obvious, but surprisingly it still does take place! Never store food of any kind in any container, in your storage unit. Why? Easy. Food attracts pests and pests will cause damage to your items.

Failing to Have Enough Help/Time

– Moving is a stressful time and during such a transition, it’s easy to lose track of stuff. Be sure that you have given yourself enough time to complete the move successfully. There is nothing more upsetting than having closing time steadily approaching and you’re only halfway done the moving process. If you store your items away in a mad rush, you’ll probably discover later that your belongings are extremely unorganized. This lack of order can also lead to damage if boxes collapse or fall over one another. Be sure you’ve recruited enough help for the move as it is physically demanding and requires significant lifting. Moving trucks that can be driven up to the storage unit are ideal. Check with your storage center to see if they offer a moving truck.

Storing Boxes that aren’t Labeled

– It is extremely frustrating to look for something in boxes that aren’t labeled accordingly. For your own sanity and to save you time, always give each box a number and a title that reflects the general content found inside.

Keep a record of the items that are in each box so you can quickly refer to them when needed.
